A collector's guide to Middle Eastern perfumery.
Oud, amber, saffron, and rose — the four pillars of Gulf perfumery, the houses that define them, and a starter shelf you won't regret.
The four pillars
Western niche perfumery is built around accords — abstract impressions assembled from dozens of synthetic molecules. Middle Eastern perfumery is built around materials. Oud, amber, saffron, rose: each one carries the perfume on its own back.
Oud
Resin from agarwood trees infected by a specific mould. Real oud is the most expensive raw material in perfumery — barnyard, leather, smoke, sweet rot. Western perfumery dilutes it; Gulf perfumery centres it. Start with Lattafa Oud Mood or Al Haramain Amber Oud Gold.
Amber
Not a single note — a category. Built from labdanum, benzoin, vanilla, and tonka, amber accords feel warm, sweet, and resinous. The Gulf treatment makes them denser and longer-lasting than Western ambers. See Lattafa Khamrah for the modern reference.
Saffron
Leather and rose with a bitter, almost medicinal top edge. Saffron is what gives modern Middle Eastern perfumery its instantly-recognisable signature. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood and Lattafa Asad sit on opposite ends of the price spectrum doing similar things.
Rose
Taif rose, grown in Saudi Arabia at altitude, is darker and more spiced than Bulgarian rose. Pairs with oud and saffron almost by default. Amouage Lyric, Xerjoff Naxos, and Lattafa Yara show the full price range.
